Recipients

Do you receive SSI/SSP benefits?

You may be eligible for CalFresh!

  • Receiving CalFresh will not reduce your SSI payment amount.

  • SSI recipients living alone or with another person not currently receiving CalFresh will likely be eligible for benefits and will need to apply for CalFresh.

  • All CalFresh households are currently receiving the maximum amount for their household size due to the pandemic until the public health emergency is lifted at the federal level.

  • If you apply for CalFresh, we highly recommend reporting all monthly medical expenses paid out of pocket. By reporting these expenses, you may be eligible for a larger amount of monthly CalFresh benefits.

    • Medical expenses range from vitamins to dental care to hospital bills. For a full list of eligible medical expenses, please see the Medical Expense Deduction Flyer.

    • If you encounter any issues with reporting your expenses to the county, please contact calfresh@sdhunger.org.

Remember:

  • Do Not give your personal information over the phone.

  • Do Not pay money for assistance.

  • Do Not accept unsolicited phone calls offering application assistance.

  • DO use the application methods below . . .

As of June 2019, SSI/SSP recipients are eligible to apply for CalFresh benefits!

Major changes have come to Californians who receive SSI/SSP benefits. San Diego Hunger Coalition is ready to help our partners and their clients navigate the CalFresh program with resources, tips, and a helping hand.

It is important to note that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients and individuals with a disability may be eligible to report their monthly medical expenses in their CalFresh application.

To receive the maximum benefits possible, it is highly encouraged for all SSI/SSP recipients to report and upload proof of medical expenses in the CalFresh application.

  • For a list of eligible medical expenses, please see the Medical Expense Deduction Flyer. We recommend going through the flyer with your clients to determine actual expenses.

  • If you encounter any issues with helping clients report their monthly medical expenses, please contact calfresh@sdhunger.org.
